Self-Hosted Project Cloud

The problem

Cloud storage is a subscription you do not control. The goal was a self-hosted alternative that matches the UX without the rent or the data exposure.

The approach

Files are the source of truth on disk; SQLite is a rebuildable index over them. Large uploads resume via 8 MiB chunks with compare-and-swap concurrency control; image, video, and PDF previews generate on demand; auth is scrypt with sliding sessions and 6-digit device pairing.

Highlights

  • Resumable chunked uploads with compare-and-swap concurrency control
  • Path-traversal-hardened storage; scrypt + sliding-session + device-pairing auth
  • Files are the source of truth — SQLite is a rebuildable index, not the system of record

Results

  • 352 passing tests, green CI
  • Resumable chunked uploads with concurrency safety
  • Shipped as a versioned Docker image
  • Path-traversal-hardened storage layer

When the stakes are correctness and data you control, this is how we build it.
